It was smooth sailing for ace deejay Vybz Kartel when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where he faced charges of using indecent language during a now infamous clash with Mavado at the Sting 25th anniversary show held on December 26, 2008 at Jamworld in St. Catherine.

Unlike Mavado, who faced a male judge and was fined the laughable sum of J$3,000 (approx. US$37.50) or face 10 months imprisonment when he appeared in Court last week, Kartel instead faced a female judge who accepted the sincerity of submissions and the guilty plea that were made by Kartel and his lawyer. Kartel’s lawyer said “Your Honour, I know the name Vybz Kartel might send off a negative vibes. However, I am representing Adidjah Palmer who is a totally different person from the entertainer persona. And it is in this light that we want to say we are sorry to the music fraternity and Jamaica at large for what happened at Sting.”

He went on to say that the entertainer is a responsible citizen, and in this light, and having owned up to his responsibilities, asked the court to admonish and discharge him of the offense. After hearing the submission, the judge said “Your lawyer said that Mr Palmer is different from Vybz Kartel but you need not be different, I cannot see how people use indecent language. It is negative and you being a responsible person must do things that reflect you as a totally responsible individual.” He was then told that he was free to go and the case was admonished and discharged.

On leaving the courthouse, Vybz Kartel had this to say: “I am pleased that things turned out this way, but I must admit that sincerity goes a long way. It was a sincere request that my lawyer put across as indeed I am sorry for the whole thing.
