Rocksteady Documentary Opens In Canada Today
Dancehall.Mobi special update – Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae, a documentary about the Jamaican music genre that preceded reggae, opens in Canada today. The 90-minute film premiered earlier this month at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, and features interviews with some of rocksteady’s leading performers and musicians.
Co-produced by Stascha Bader (a Swiss national) and Moss Raxlen (a Canadian), the documentary was partially funded by the Jamaican government, and some of the featured interviewees are Marcia Griffiths, Leroy Sibbles, Judy Mowatt, Hopeton Lewis, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan and Dawn Penn. It reportedly took five years to compile, and features a soundtrack with music by some of the interviewees.
The documentary’s Canadian run begins in Toronto and Vancouver, and it is scheduled to open in Ottawa in August. It is not clear when it will actually be featured / premiered in Jamaica.
