Usain Bolt Playing With Fire In Gaza vs. Gully War?
Dancehall.Mobi special update – Usain Bolt is Jamaica’s sprint super hero, a man who will soon become the youngest ever recipient of one of Jamaica’s highest national honors – the Order of Jamaica – and a man who was recently named Jamaica’s Ambassador-at-Large with full diplomatic status; among other accolades. The on-going Gaza (Vybz Kartel) vs. Gully (Mavado) saga is never far off the radar of most young people here in Jamaica, and in many past interviews where he has been asked the question, Usain Bolt has not been afraid to state his preference for Vybz Kartel (i.e. the Gaza). In a recent television interview, he reiterated that he’s a passionate Vybz Kartel/Portmore Empire/Gaza fan, but highlighted that as long as both artistes “kept the war lyrical”, he had no problem.
Last night was Bolt’s welcome home party at his favorite place to party – the Quad Night Club in New Kingston – but he reportedly made statements on the microphone to the packed club that can only lead you to question the sensibility of his actions. According to eyewitness reports, the party was in full swing and an extended segment of Mavado songs was being played when Bolt appeared in the DJ’s booth and announced on the microphone that this is the end of the ‘Gully tunes’ and that “a gaza mi seh, and anybody nuh like dat jump inna gully.“
Knowing his famous personality, there is no doubt that his words were said in jest, but given recent violent incidents involving ‘Gaza’ and ‘Gully’ fans, and given how notoriously easy it is to incite violence here in Jamaica, his words seem a bit over the top – because ultimately this Gaza vs. Gully war is no joke. From his own perspective as well, he should recognize that by drawing lines and making statements (unsolicited), he may be playing with fire, as his almost demi-God status here in Jamaica may mean nothing to some die hard ‘Gully’ fan who decides to take him on physically or verbally because of his words.
Usain Bolt is Jamaica’s hero, and although he’s still just a fun-loving 23 year old, he needs to display a higher level of maturity on this matter. In fact, as was done a few years ago by Deputy Police Commissioner of police Mark Shields, Dancehall.Mobi would now like to see Usain Bolt be the one to broker a meeting and peace deal between the Vybz Kartel and Mavado camps – a far more desirable scenario than him adding fuel to the fire.
Agree with the opinions expressed here. Some people fool fool and tek dis Gaza v Gully ting too serious and foolishness happens as a result. A big man like Bolt, no matter what his personal preference may be, should not PUBLICLY express a preference because that causes further division amongst the people. I do agree that he is one of the few people that both artists MAY be willing to sit down with and decide to end this lyrical warfare.
mi is a gully fan but mi still rate gaza chune dem even when dem a diss gully/alliance.Usain u free to endorse gaza, but realize what u have achieved comes with GREAT responsibility as your multi million dollar endorsers are watching your every move and what u SAY.This gaza/gully ting is reaching a violent point right now and what u said can be turned around as used as said u are inciting violence.U are a INTERNATIONAL figure and u know how they quick to fight yardie already.U can be a BIGGER person if u sit down with the two camps and have them publicly denounce the voilence that is happening between the fans.
Usain is entitled to his opinion and his choice. What he needs is a discussion with his PR personnel about what to say when and where to express his opinions.. He is still very young. He can also influence a lot of young minds. Hero worship can sometimes be misplaced
Usain bolt opinion will just create more violence in Jamaica.As a hero he should be careful on what he says.An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth and Jamaica youths will be blind and toothless…I would like to bring to attention of all youths in Jamaica that it is their duty to voice and express solidarity against such acts of violence.
Dancehall music has now being changed to act of verbal violence instead of inspiration and educative.That is why me rank Bobo and a few Dancehall musicians.be positive n don’t bring slackness in reggae music.Queen Ifrica always tells us not bring slackness in reggae music…..

Rite now even though im a Gaza Fan, i am a bit disappointed in Usain’s speech the other night @ Quad. I think with the aclades that are being besowed upon him, he should be cuatious in hs words, re “gully vs. gaza” dispute, so as not o incite any form of violence that might tarnish his reputation. At the moment i am in the uk and the way gaza and gully is influencing the people in the country is terrible! it is not kartel and movado’s fault its society which is getting worst nowadays. Usain bolt is actually far more famouse at the moment than both artist and they highly love him in the UK. I was also dissapointed on what i heard him say, true he is entitled to his opinion but it don’t make things better. I think has a global superstar he should take the stage at sting 2009 and bring all the artist from both gaza and gully to END it right there. if you realise its not about the pnp and jlp war any more it is like the gaza and gully is what it is all over now. Usain makes a huge impact on the world and many people look up to him so if he did this then i can garantee he would make a big impact on everyone. They are all great artist from both sides and kartel and movado should not be fully compared. Movado is great at what he does which is (singing) and he makes great tunes. Movado should not use the term God to describe his character, we all know he is just using it to describe his status in jamaica but it is Blasfimy and if your shouting Gods name and yet still calling yourself GULLY GOD then he is just mocking. Vybz Kartel now is a lyrical genious but he just needs to watch what he says sometimes, people say he worships the devil but honestly he dont. Kartel uses the devil/evil out of poportion to describe how badder he is than movado and when he is actually saying he don’t want to know God, he is actually talking about movado who claims hes a gully God. All these artist all believe in God but it is music making them write over the top. Movado is the biggest singing artist in jamaica and i fully rate him. Vybz kartel is the best lyrical artist in jamaica right now and i fully rate him aswell. people please take into consideration that this war can end at sting but all you need to do is inform jam world on the idea and the council and people of jamaica. thank you
