Karl Young (Irie FM / Zip FM Founder) Has Died
Karl Young, founder and chairman of Grove Broadcasting Ltd. (operators of IRIE FM and ZIP-FM), died yesterday. He had reportedly been ailing for some time now, and was recovering from lung surgery at a hospital in Chicago, USA at the time of his death. Young’s place in reggae history is significant, as he was the founder of the world’s first all-reggae radio station – IRIE FM – in 1990. He later founded ZIP FM, which has joined its sister station in dominating Jamaica’s radio airwaves. Condolences to Mr. Young’s family, friends, associates and to the staff of IRIE and ZIP.
