Marley Family Loses Copyright Lawsuit Against Universal Music Group
The family of reggae legend Bob Marley, has lost a lawsuit that sought the copyrights to several of the late singer’s best-known recordings, specifically the albums Catch A Fire, Burnin, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration and Exodus, which were all recorded for Island Records. The Marley family had filed the lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), claiming that they were owed back royalties from the singer’s releases between 1973 and 1977. In Manhattan, New York on Friday (September 10) however, a judge ruled that the UMG Recordings unit of Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group is the rightful owner of copyrights to the five albums that Marley had recorded between 1973 and 1977.
