Catchy and accessible, this has the potential to be a huge hit for both artistes. Check it out below.

Just days after launching a ‘Champs’-related promotion campaign named after up & coming dancehall artiste Potential Kidd’s song ‘Ah Yah So Nice’, telecommunications giant LIME has backtracked on the move due to “the nature of the performer’s lyrics.”

Earlier this evening, LIME issued the following release:

LIME has facilitated a dialogue between dancehall artiste Potential Kid and citizens who have vocalized their concerns about the nature of the performer’s lyrics.

The move comes shortly after the company made changes to a ‘Champs’ related campaign called ‘Ah Yah So Nice’ which featured Potential Kidd.

In a message posted on the company’s social media pages, LIME stated that after analyzing the unedited version of the song, it agreed that the lyrics were unacceptable.

LIME Jamaica’s Managing Director, Garry Sinclair who informed that the company has decided to replace the artiste in the promotion also said “What we would want is for our artistes to express themselves freely but responsibly and we think civil society can play a big role in this regard”.

Sinclair also stated that the company does not endorse or support any idea or sentiment that promotes unlawful or anti-social behaviour against any person in the society.

Kidd, who was also present at the meeting, apologized to persons who may have been offended by the lyrics and said “I do not support violence against women or homosexuals.”

In 2009/2010, popular dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel used music to declare his preference for a particular brand of shoes, the British-made Clarks. His Clarks song [Amazon | iTunes], which also features Gaza Slim and Popcaan, undoubtedly helped inspire thousands of Jamaicans at home and abroad, to buy more of this particular shoe brand.

Jamaicans have long had an affinity for Clarks, it has been talked about and sung about in numerous dancehall and reggae stores over the past two to three decades. Back in 2010, shoe stores in Jamaica as well as in foreign cities with heavy Jamaican immigrant populations, said sales of Clarks multiplied since the single was released, and an increasing number of persons were seen wearing Clarks shoes at parties, dances and other popular events.

Even today, the shoe remains extremely popular (you can try to use a Famous Footwear Coupon Code to get a Clarks shoe discount) at online stores and brick and mortar shoe outlets. Shoe naming-dropping has been popular in other music genres as well. In 1986, the popular 80s rap group, Run DMC, released the track “My Adidas”, a reference to the sneaker brand which was extremely popular among the young and hip kids of the day. Since then it has certainly become a trend for American rappers and dancehall artistes to talk about the brands of shoes they were wearing, as well as their other earthly possessions too.

What should be the next level in this regard for Jamaican artistes though? Should they be securing shoe endorsement fees and getting paid to talk about the shoe brands they love?
